Aurea is a fair trade business that showcases jewelry and accessories made of sustainably harvested Golden Grass (Syngonanthus nitens). Golden Grass is a rare flowering plant that has a stunning golden sheen. Harvested only once a year, its delicate stems are hand woven into beautiful accessories, following an ancient weaving tradition. Aurea’s commitment to fair trade helps promote social and economic development to the communities of Jalapão, Brazil.
We believe that Golden Grass designs are a great example of sustainability in a larger concept. It’s not only about the material but also about the process, the people involved, the cultural traditions and the conservation of the environment. Our mission is to promote beauty through responsible choices. Our collection reflects a refined combination of elegant and timeless designs. It includes versatile jewelry that can be worn with different looks, from casual to stylish, day or night.
Our designs are made of Golden Grass (Syngonanthus nitens), a flowering plant native to Jalapão, central Brazil. Our partners are artisans that are trained and certified in sustainable practices by the local environmental agency. Golden Grass stalks are handpicked during the harvest season which occurs only once a year. This careful process makes golden grass even more unique. Some of our designs use traditional hand-spun thread made of the leaves of native Buriti palm (Mauritia flexuosa).
Golden Grass is a vegetable material from a renewable source. We don’t use any chemicals in the raw material nor any dyes or coatings in the manufacturing process. We believe that handmade products are better alternatives to the environmentally-ruinous consequences of mass production. Our crafting process has a very small carbon footprint. Most materials used in our Golden Grass are natural and biodegradable. Our designs are timeless and versatile and can be combined with a variety of looks.
Golden grass is a pure vegetable fiber from a renewable source, naturally biodegradable. It grows in the wild without use of pesticides or other toxic products. The process of weaving the material is very artisanal and has a very low footprint impact: the grass is picked by hand then left to dry naturally. It’s then hand woven without use of other chemicals, dyes or coatings. The artisans work from their homes, pacing the work to their rhythm while taking care of their families and housework.
Aurea’s founders worked in the social sector in Brazil. When they moved to the US, they realized how much the American market was evolving to embrace meaningful products and processes that were more conscious of their impact on the earth and people. They thought there was an opportunity to bring the Golden Grass pieces to the US market and combine their experience with their passion for Brazilian culture. We are constantly sharing Aurea’s experience with other social entrepreneurships.
Our Golden Grass parts are woven in the communities of Jalapão, Brazil. In this remote rural area, the artisans don’t have easy and affordable access to a variety of hardware and embellishments. We thus make an effort to use materials available in the region like seeds and fabric cords. The Golden Grass parts and final products are shipped to Aurea in the US. We finish the designs using materials sourced in the US. We look for unique hardware to complement our designs.
We work with artisans that organize themselves around producer-owned associations to maintain the region’s cultural legacy, empower themselves and enhance the living conditions of their families. We source directly from these partners. They have autonomy to decide on their prices and are in control of their production. Although they are independent and have other customers, we have built a very close relationship based on respect, transparency and collaboration. We pay fair-trade prices to them.
